Westwind Rods. A workshop where the gear is built. Six generations on.

Here's what we promise: if a rod leaves our workshop with our name on it, we'll fix it. That's not a marketing line — it's the policy we've run since 2011, and it's the reason most of our customers are still customers ten years on. Limited Lifetime Warranty on every blank we build. Turnaround on repairs is typically two weeks. If it's going to take longer, we'll tell you before you ship it.

The operation behind that promise is small by design. Six rod-builders and one fitter, working out of a workshop we've occupied since the beginning. We blank our own graphite and bamboo rods — multi-modulus graphite for the fast-action salmon and saltwater weights, hand-split Tonkin for the slower trout builds. Hardware comes from two suppliers we've used since the start: titanium SiC guides, AAA-grade cork, machined aluminium reel seats. Nothing gets swapped for a cheaper version mid-run without a note in the spec sheet.

Robert Ashfield started this after eighteen years guiding and repairing other people's rods. The founding logic was simple: most warranty services were slow, most rod shops didn't fish, and most gear advice came from a catalogue. We do it differently. Every member of the team fishes — at least thirty days a season, usually more.

We don't sell anything we haven't tested on water. No impulse buys, no fast-fashion colourways, no gear that looks good in a photo and fails in a spate. Join the community of anglers who've trusted us to build and back their kit since 2011. What we won't do is stock a rod we wouldn't hand to a friend.

Straight answers

Questions we get from the riverbank.

Rod selection, warranty, shipping into the EU and Norway, care between seasons. Written by the people who build the gear.

01 How do I choose the right rod weight for the water I fish?

Reassuring answer first: there is no wrong choice if you match the rod to the water honestly. A 5wt like the Cairn handles most trout rivers — riffles, pools, medium-sized flies. Step up to an 8wt Helmsdale when you're on salmon water or anywhere a quartering wind is part of the day. The Tay 13'0" 8wt is built specifically for Spey-style two-handed casting on big, wide rivers. If you are unsure, tell us the water type and typical fly size and we will point you straight. — Iain M., Senior Rod Builder, 22 seasons on the Spey.

02 What does your lifetime warranty actually cover?

It covers manufacturing defects and structural failure under normal fishing use. Blanks, guides, reel seat hardware, whippings — if something fails because of how the rod was built, we rebuild it. What it doesn't cover is a tip section shut in a car door or a blank snapped against a rock. Those we can still repair, at a fair cost, in our workshop. Turnaround on warranty rebuilds is typically three weeks. We will tell you honestly if a rod is beyond repair rather than patch something that won't hold. — Iain M., Senior Rod Builder, 22 seasons on the Spey.

03 Do you ship to EU countries, Norway, and Switzerland?

Yes. We ship across the EU, to Norway, and to Switzerland. EU orders are dispatched with duties and VAT handled at checkout — no surprise charges at the door. Norway and Switzerland sit outside EU customs, so those orders ship DDP where we can arrange it, and we flag the process clearly before you confirm. Tracked shipping on all rod and reel orders. Delivery is usually seven to ten working days from dispatch. Wading jackets and soft goods typically arrive a day or two faster.

04 Can I return a rod if it does not suit my casting style?

Yes, within 30 days of delivery, unused and in original packaging. We know a rod has to feel right in the hand before you commit to it. If the Cairn 5wt feels too fast for your loop or the Helmsdale doesn't load where you want it, send it back and we will either exchange it or refund in full. We don't deduct a restocking fee. What we ask is that you don't fish it first and then return it — that is fair to both of us.

05 How should I store and care for my fly rod between seasons?

Rinse the rod with clean water after every day on salt or peaty water — both are corrosive to guides over time. Dry it fully before it goes back in the tube. Check the ferrules every few trips and wipe with a light wax if they are sticking. Store horizontally if you can, or vertically tip-up. Never lean a rod in a corner by the butt — it puts a slow set into the blank over months. The CORDURA sleeve that ships with our rods is there for a reason; use it.

06 Do you have a trade-in or second-life programme for older gear?

We do. Bring in a used Westwind rod or reel in honest condition — we inspect it, agree a store credit value, refurbish it in the workshop, and offer it as a second-life piece. It keeps good gear out of landfill and makes the entry price easier for someone coming into the sport. We also take in select third-party rods on a case-by-case basis. Drop us a message through the Contacts page with photos and the rod's history and we will come back to you with a straight answer.

07 What is the difference between the Alta reel and the Usk for everyday trout fishing?

The Alta Large Arbor #7-9 is a disc-drag reel built for salmon and heavier line weights — fast retrieve, smooth drag under pressure, machined aluminium frame. It is more reel than you need for a 5wt trout setup. The Usk Click-Pawl #4-6 is the right choice for most river trout work: lighter in the hand, simple mechanism, almost nothing to go wrong. The click-pawl gives you audible feedback on a running fish, which matters more than people admit. Pair the Usk with the Cairn 5wt and you have a setup that will last twenty years without complaint.

08 How do I know if the Spey 3-Layer Wading Jacket will keep me dry in serious rain?

The Spey jacket runs a 3-layer GORE-TEX construction — face fabric, membrane, and liner bonded together, fully seam-sealed. It is not a 2.5-layer packable shell. It is built for days when the weather is genuinely bad and you are standing in it for eight hours. The DWR finish will degrade with use; when water stops beading on the surface, reproof with a wash-in treatment at 40°C. Do not iron it. The jacket breathes well enough for a long walk-in but it is not an alpine climbing shell — it is a fishing jacket, specced for what fishing actually demands. — Rory B., Wading Specialist, 17 seasons.

"Took the Westwind 9'0" 6wt out for a full week on low-water trout beats in early autumn. The action is exactly what they say — medium-fast, loads at short range without rushing the back cast. Tracked a dry fly through a long riffle on light tippet and didn't lose a single fish to a soft hook-set. Build quality on the cork grip and the AAA reel seat is the best I've handled at this price point. I'd buy it again without hesitation."

"Ordered a 9'6" 8wt four-piece for a late-season salmon trip. Rod arrived in a solid triangular tube with a CORDURA sleeve — well thought out. On the water it handled a heavy intermediate line in a quartering wind without any complaint. Tip flex is honest — enough give to protect a lighter tippet, enough reserve in the mid-section when you need to drive a fly into a fast seam. Westwind replied to two technical questions before I even placed the order. That counts for a lot."

"Third rod I've bought from Westwind. The 5wt bamboo is a thing of genuine craft — slow action, beautiful finish, and the ferrules fit tighter than anything I've owned. One honest note: delivery ran to ten days rather than the five the page suggested. No damage, well packed, but I'd allow extra time if you're buying before a planned trip. The rod itself is faultless."

"I was sceptical ordering a rod I hadn't cast first. Westwind's pre-purchase consultation changed that — I described my water and typical fly sizes, they recommended the 7wt medium-fast four-piece, and they were right. Disc drag on the matched reel is smooth at every setting. No issues after three months of regular use."

"The 4wt glass rod is a pleasure to cast — slow, forgiving, exactly the revival of fibreglass action I was looking for on small chalk streams. My only gripe is the rod bag that comes with it. The zip is stiff and the fabric feels lighter than the rod deserves. The rod itself earns five stars. The accessories packaging pulls it to three for me. Worth buying, just expect to pair it with a better sleeve."

"Fished a 9'0" 8wt Westwind across ten days in the Vesterålen last April — sleet one morning, full sun the next, strong tidal current throughout. The large-arbor reel they matched it with picked up line fast enough in a running fish situation. SiC guides showed zero wear after days of saltwater exposure. This rod was built for exactly that kind of work."

Is this gear for you?

You measure success in seasons. Not in seasons on Instagram.

01

You've been at it long enough to know which compromises matter on day eight, not day one.

02

You read material specs before marketing — denier counts, fill weights, GPM ratings.

03

You'd rather buy one piece this decade than three over the same span.

04

You want to talk to someone who's actually been out in the field, not a script in a call centre.
